For the lowest weight and most power, European manufacturers like KTM and Husqvarna offer very serious (and expensive) lightweight double sports. But all Japanese manufacturers also sell cheaper models in displacements from 200 to 650cc. The 250 weighs just 296 pounds at around 321 pounds and still makes enough power for riders (who aren`t exceptionally tall) to not only tackle multiple off-road bikes on the same terrain — at a slower pace — but they can also be driven from home to the starting point, skipping the entire loading/unloading/repetitive process.
More land is also open to dual sport because, unlike an off-road motorcycle, it has a license plate and is legal on the thousands of miles of dirt public roads that connect, say, Nevada`s ghost towns and Tennessee`s national forests. Riding and owning off-road motorcycles is certainly more complicated than living with a street bike, and this complication creates an inertia that can be difficult to overcome as you get older and busier, dealing with, for example, kids, a job, and a mortgage. Off-road riding is fun, exciting, challenging, and helps develop skills that you can use on the road, but since the motorcycle can only be ridden off-road in designated areas, you`ll need to find it there first. This requires a truck or towing vehicle and trailer, ramps to load the bike into the truck, fasteners to secure it, and the ability to do all of this in the first place. The 2020 Yamaha WR250R we tested for this story shares much of its sister WR250F`s DNA, but has far fewer pieces of Unobtanium for racing, so it costs $1,900 less. However, at £296, it`s still the lightest of Japan`s affordable 200/250 double sports. The WR250R`s liquid-cooled single is based on the F`s 250cc enduro engine and shares the same bore and stroke, but has, among other things, lower compression and softer cam profiles for greater on-road transportability. The seat height is still quite high at 36.6 inches, but that`s an inch lower than the F, and the R still sucks in bumps with 10.6 inches of fully adjustable travel at each end. And it`s averaging 61 mpg! Almost new 2012 Yamaha WR250R road to two uses legal enduro with only 910 miles. Only sale due to injuries that prevent further driving. Some slight wear and scratches due to occasional off-road driving, nothing serious or functionally damaged in any way. Tires always have the most buttons.
