Learning at Law School is therefore a participatory and collaborative project between teachers and students. This is especially true for the first-year program, where students are first exposed to legal analysis. In the courses of the first year of study, students share the stage with the teacher. The professor does not give lectures, but engages the group in a dialogue.
This dialogue, known as the Socratic method, offers students the opportunity to address questions about sensitive legal concepts and principles in real time, as practicing lawyers do on a daily basis. The Socratic method is essential to the first-year curriculum, and personal presence and participation are essential to its success. Legal analysis and writing (2 credits, depending on successful completion of the two semesters of this course). You can even learn a lot by simply “failing” a practical trial and learning from your mistakes. For example, if your criminal law course meets three times a week for one hour per class, you should set aside six hours a week to focus solely on those readings. Don`t worry, you don`t have to read criminal cases for six hours. Divide your reading into one- or two-hour blocks throughout the week. All first-year students also participate in the Legal Writing program under the supervision of one of six Bigelow Teaching Fellows. “Bigelow” (as the course is called) introduces students to the standard tools and techniques of legal research and requires students to write a series of legal notes and dissertations. During the spring term, each student prepares an appeal brief and argues the case before a panel of faculty members and practicing alumni.
The Bigelow course is taught in small sections by about 30 students.
