After leaving South Africa in 1978, Andrew`s legal career in the UK focused on the media industry and corporate takeovers and litigation. He was the architect of the legal strategy that the television company pursued during the 1987 strike, altering the balance of power between employers and unions in the television industry. A former institutional investment dealer, nomad and full list sponsor, he is known for leveraging his extensive trading experience to help his clients resolve their legal issues. He has been recognised by Legal 500 as a registered lawyer in the Private Acquisition and Merger category (less than £100 million) and in the Debt Capital Market category. After retiring in 2002, Andrew provided legal support to the environmental think tank Forum for the Future. Andrew was born in Johannesburg to Arthur, a judge of the Court of Appeal, and his wife Erna (née Templin). He attended St. John`s College School in Johnnanesburg, then earned a law degree from the city`s University of the Witwatersrand, followed by his articles at the law firm of Bowman Gilfillan. In 1968, he married Jill Denoon, an editorial assistant and human rights activist. In 1982, he became a partner in the law firm of Lovell, White and King and established their labour law practice in the UK and Europe. Our corporate team can provide support in all areas of legal support for businesses, including the following key areas: Speech privacy is an essential aspect of office acoustics, especially when it comes to boardrooms and meeting rooms.
Many office discussions are best conducted behind closed doors, but how can you know if a spy is able to listen to your discussions? To provide guidance on this acoustic technology issue, the international standard ASTM E2638-10 defines five levels of voice privacy and security for meeting rooms and closed offices (see table). Andrew Williamson graduated as a lawyer in 1990 and has worked in the corporate sector throughout his career. My friend Andrew Williamson, who died at the age of 78, was involved as a lawyer in several important anti-apartheid trials in South Africa and later established himself as a labour law specialist in the UK. You`re sitting in a restaurant surrounded by some of your best friends. The food is excellent and the drinks are cold. The restaurant is gradually filling up. Between chatter and background music, you begin to raise your voice to be heard by those at your table. You are not alone. Almost everyone does the same. The chatter in the background gets louder and louder as everyone in the room also raises their voices to make themselves heard. This is the Lombard effect: man`s tendency to raise his voice in the presence of noise.
Concerned apartment owners often ask me, “Does the noise I can hear in my apartment exceed the limits allowed by the Building Code?” “The Salesperson” Andrew Williamson leads a team whose “client management skills are the best in the industry and provide a “service led by partners of people who are both business people and lawyers”. Legal 500 Known for saying what he thought, he was generous and passionate and was a strong family man who had a general enthusiasm for life. As a relatively new immigrant from London, UK, who is used to pubs closing around 11pm, I find this attitude a bit difficult to understand. However, one thing I`ve noticed since working here in the field of acoustic consulting is that noise regulation in this city is less stressful than in London. Vancouver seems to be a city with lower noise levels. Andrew was also a trustee of the Legal Assistance Trust, founded by human rights lawyer Felicia Kentridge, Wife of Sir Sydney, and later became a trustee of the Canon Collins Educational and Legal Assistance Trust, which provides financial support to PhD students in Southern Africa.
In South Africa, Andrew represented author and activist Breyten Breytenbach in his 1975 trial under the Draconian Terrorism Act. Breytenbach was sentenced to nine years in prison – but escaped the death penalty – for trying to create a white wing of the banned African National Congress. If we need to hire the best, it`s worth looking for those candidates. BAP Acoustics hired andrew williamson, a senior consultant for our Victoria office, earlier this spring. After graduating from the University of Victoria in 2003 with a bachelor`s degree in mechanical engineering, Andrew “quickly fell in love with acoustic technology” as a new employee at a small acoustics company. “I really appreciated the dynamic diversity of the work and its significant overlap with architecture,” says Andrew, who was named a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) by the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of the Province of British Columbia (APEGBC) in 2009. A confident speaker, he has shared technical information with the public, local councils, government officials and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) on numerous occasions. In addition to participating in public meetings, open houses and government-sponsored working groups, Andrew has also appeared as an expert witness at the Supreme Court of British Columbia and participated in a joint hearing of the Review Panel on the Environmental Impact Assessment of a Major Infrastructure Project.
Andrew also briefed Sir Sydney Kentridge`s lawyer on several other apartheid-related cases, and the two maintained a close friendship after both moving to Britain in the late 1970s.
